Suit Fit Styles

Fit Type Description Best For
Slim Fit Tailored close to the body with minimal excess fabric. Narrow lapels, higher armholes, tapered trousers. Lean, athletic builds. Modern, fashion-forward look.
Modern Fit Slightly relaxed through chest and waist with a gentle taper. Medium lapels, comfortable armholes. Most body types. Contemporary professional appearance.
Classic Fit Traditional cut with more room through chest, waist, and seat. Fuller cut trousers, wider lapels. Broader builds, those preferring traditional styling and maximum comfort.
Tailored Fit Between slim and modern - shaped but not tight. Follows body contours without restriction. Athletic builds. Balance of style and comfort.

Professional Fitting Tips:

  • Jacket Shoulders: The seam should sit exactly at your shoulder point - not beyond or before
  • Jacket Length: The jacket should cover your seat and end around mid-hand when arms are at your sides
  • Sleeve Length: Jacket sleeves should end at your wrist bone, showing 1/4" to 1/2" of shirt cuff
  • Jacket Buttons: When buttoned, you should be able to fit a fist between your chest and the jacket
  • Trouser Break: Trousers should have a slight break (crease) where they meet your shoes
  • Trouser Waist: Should sit comfortably at your natural waist without needing a belt to hold them up
  • Collar Gap: No gap should appear between your shirt collar and jacket collar at the back of your neck

Alteration Considerations:

  • Sleeve length and trouser length are easily altered
  • Taking in the waist or seat is straightforward
  • Shoulder alterations are complex and expensive - get this measurement right from the start
  • Jacket length can be shortened slightly but not lengthened
  • Most designer suits benefit from professional tailoring for a perfect fit
  • Budget £50-150 for basic alterations, more for extensive work

Measuring for Bespoke or Made-to-Measure:

For custom tailoring, additional measurements are required including back length, across back, front length, armhole depth, thigh, and knee. Always consult with a professional tailor for bespoke suiting.
